per square inch : abscissas represent volumes of unity of weight (i lb.lt Thus BA is the volume (4.73 cu. ft.) of one pound of steam at a total pressure of 90 pounds per square inch; ABCD is the external work done in its production. It is this curve which is commonly assumed to be that of the expansion of steam.

The curve AOI is the curve of dry and saturated steam, its co-ordinates representing the simultaneous pressure and volume of the fluid when in contact with the mass of water from which it is produced. The expansion is less, and the rate of fall of pressure greater, than if it were to follow the law
